Star Trek Private Premiere Party
What did you miss?

event Sponsors and Partners On May 8th, 2009 the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum was transformed by the Austin Planetarium into a glorified sci-fi showcase featuring everything from fans decked out in 23rd century attire, to themed food, comedy sketches and music. One lucky Austinite even won a Zero-G flight!

Start Trekkin’, a local group of improv actors took to the stage to perform a “Trek” comedy sketch, while The Austin Wind Symphony serenaded the audience with music from the Star Trek films and television programs.

Kate McPartlin, was ecstatic to learn she had won the Zero-G flight when her ticket was pulled at the event. After careful consideration she decided to hand her round trip ticket into weightlessness to her boyfriend Richard Eguchi. Upon learning of the hand-off, Executive Director of the Austin Planetarium Torvald Hessel, simply smiled and said,

”She must love him very much.”

A celestial costume contest was also held, and judged (American Idol style) by Space enthusiast Richard Garriott, Professor Jim Heath, and News 8 Austin’s very own Burton Fitzsimmons. After seeing the contestants up close and personal, even Lord Vader was green with envy when Leann Tipton, dressed as an Orion Slave girl (head to toe) took home the grand prize.

After 3 hours in the “Trek Fest”, the anticipation finally came to an end, as VIP members were escorted into a special viewing of Paramount’s newest “Star Trek” in the IMAX theatre. With over 650 people in attendance, this proved to be an out of this world fundraiser for the Austin Planetarium, and an event that any honorable Trekkie wouldn’t have missed for the world.
